Marine Gas Oil (MGO)
Product Overview

Distillate Fuel for the Modern Maritime Industry

Marine Gas Oil (MGO) is the distillate fuel of choice for the modern maritime industry. Unlike heavy fuel oil (HFO), MGO is a lighter, cleaner-burning distillate that produces significantly lower emissions, requires minimal onboard treatment, and is compatible with the emission control technologies increasingly mandated by the IMO.

At Hibernia Diesel, we supply DMA-grade MGO conforming to ISO 8217:2017 specifications. With the IMO 2020 global sulfur cap (0.50% m/m outside ECAs) and stricter regional limits (0.10% in ECAs), the demand for low-sulfur MGO has grown significantly. We supply MGO across the sulfur spectrum — from standard marine grades to ultra-low sulfur variants for ECA compliance.

Sulfur Options

Choose Your Sulfur Level

Grade 1: MGO Standard — ≤ 0.50% Sulfur (5,000 ppm)
IMO 2020 Global Sulfur Cap Compliant
Most Economical

Complies with IMO 2020 global sulfur cap for operation outside Emission Control Areas (ECAs). Suitable for vessels not equipped with scrubbers when operating in international waters. Typical use: deep-sea vessels, general cargo ships on international routes.

Grade 2: MGO Ultra-Low Sulfur — ≤ 0.10% Sulfur (1,000 ppm)
ECA (Emission Control Area) Compliant
ECA Compliant

For vessels operating in ECAs (North Sea, Baltic Sea, North American coasts, US Caribbean), vessels at berth in EU ports with low-sulfur requirements, and vessels with SCR emission control systems. Premium over standard MGO reflecting deep desulfurization cost.

Grade 3: MGO Ultra-Low — ≤ 10 ppm Sulfur (Automotive Equivalent)
Premium Grade for High-Spec Marine Engines
Premium

Maximum sulfur 10 ppm — suitable for vessels with the latest SCR systems, research vessels with sensitive instrumentation, and premium yacht engines requiring automotive-grade diesel cleanliness. Quoted on request.

FAQ

Common Questions

What's the minimum order for MGO bunkering?
Typically 2,000–5,000 litres for truck-to-ship bunkering in Dubai ports. Larger minimums may apply for remote ports or barge deliveries. Contact us with your vessel details for a specific quotation.
Is MGO the same as diesel for trucks?
Similar, but not identical. While both are middle distillates, MGO conforms to ISO 8217 (marine specification), while road diesel conforms to EN 590 (automotive specification). Key difference: MGO flash point is minimum 60°C (SOLAS requirement) vs. 55°C for road diesel. Using road diesel in marine engines may not meet SOLAS flash point requirements and could be a safety and insurance issue. Always use MGO for marine applications.
Do I need to be present during bunkering?
Your vessel's chief engineer or designated officer should be present to oversee the operation, verify the product, check seals, witness sampling, and sign the Bunker Delivery Note. This is standard maritime practice — not just Hibernia policy.
Can you supply MGO for vessels at Fujairah anchorage?
Yes — we can arrange truck-to-ship delivery at Fujairah Port and coordinate barge delivery at Fujairah anchorage via partner barge operators. Contact our trading desk with your vessel schedule, IMO number, and required quantity.
